26th January 2017

All my dear Railwaymen & their family members,
Members of Press and Media, Ladies and Gentlemen and dear Children,

Very Good morning to  all!.

On the occasion of 68th Republic Day of our beloved Nation today, it is my privilege to extend my best wishes and greetings to all of you.  Ever since we adopted our constitution on January 26th 1950 noble ideals of equality, justice and harmony formed the basis of governance of our Nation, and entire population of our country without any bias or discrimination could participate in a democratic way towards the building of our nation. This day gives us an opportunity to respectfully remember the great leaders and freedom fighters without whose contribution this would not have been possible.  It is a matter of great pride for all of us that now we are the most populous democratic country in the world having power in the hands of common people. I am sure that the patriotic fervour and festivities today will encourage all of us to keep our democracy strong and vibrant and motivate us to work towards making our nation great. Reflecting the ethos and values enshrined in our constitution, Southern Railway with its hardworking and dedicated employees, fosters unity, national integration and contributes to economic development of our country.

Our performance this year up to December 2016, has shown marginal decline over  last year, apportioned earnings are  down by 1.8% at Rs. 5505 cr. A section of the gathering

With a view to operate the trains safely with enhanced focus on maintenance of assets, such as locomotives, coaches, tracks, etc., Indian Railways has taken up the task of educating its work force at the grass root levels, that will reduce the incurrence of rail mishaps.  As part of this mission, Seminars focusing on safe train operations are being conducted all over Southern Railway.

In such a seminar conducted at Salem Division today (20.01.2017),  Sri G.V.L. Satyakumar, Executive Director, Railway Board, participated as the Special Invitee and interacted with officers, supervisors and staff of Salem Division.  The Seminar was attended by Sri Hari Shankar Verma, DRM, Sri Chandrapal, ADRM, and other officers of Salem Division. Officers in charge of various Branches such as Mechanical, Electrical, Operations, etc., submitted presentations on safety aspects of their individual branches during the Seminar.

While addressing the participants, Sri Satyakumar said that accidents are not just one time occurrence, but are results of chain of events like failure to check, failure to maintain, failure to follow set norms, etc. He called upon the grass root level railway staff such as track maintainers, signaling staff, and others to focus more on maintenance and operation practices. He said that failure to keep vigil and inspect on regular basis, will have an impact on punctuality of trains also.  By looking the system as a whole and not in parts, and by plugging the deficiencies effectively, the goal of safety in train operations can be achieved together, he felt.

During his address, Sri Hari Shankar Verma said that Salem Division is taking up all precautious inspections and preventive maintenance seriously with a view to achieve the goal of zero accidents. He also said that if each and every person take up their role seriously and perform their duties accordingly, there would be no scope for errors.

Earlier, Sri S. Rajkumar, Sr. Divisional Safety Officer, Salem, welcomed the gathering. Sri M. Prabhakaran, Sr. Divl Electrical Engineer, rendered the note of thanks.
