Salem junction rated No.1 cleanest station among all Indian Railway Divisional Head Quarters Railway Stations & rated among the top 10 cleanest railway stations, in survey conducted by IRCTC for Indian Railways, and Erode junction secures 5th rank




Under the “Swachch Rail, Swachch Bharat” (Clean Railways, Clean India) campaign, a survey was conducted by Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), among the passengers in A1 (the stations that earn above Rs.60 crores per annum revenue) and A (the stations that earn between Rs.5 crores and Rs.60 crores revenue per annum) category railway stations, providing various parameters.  Cleanliness in 407 stations requesting passengers to grade them from 1 for very good to 5 for below average.

IRCTC has now submitted its final reports. According to the report, out of the 407 stations, 105 stations were rated at Cleanliness Levels 1 & 2, 166 stations at Level 3 and 136 stations in Levels 4 & 5. Among the 17 zones of Indian Railways, 3 zones viz. Western, South Western and Southern Railway have been rated as the best zones.

1.        In the Survey, in the ratings for the Railway Stations in Divisional Head Quarters, Salem Junction has been ranked No.1
2.            Salem Junction has also been rated among the top 10 cleanest railway stations and has been ranked as the 9th Cleanest Railway station among the A1 and A category stations all over Indian Railways. 
3.           In the ratings for the cleanest Divisions, Salem Division, Southern Railway, has been ranked as the 4th cleanest Division among the 68 Indian Railway Divisions.
4.                 In the rating for stations that handle 10,000-25,000 passengers per day, Salem Junction has been ranked at No.3, with Erode Junction at No.5.

Salem Division surpasses ticket checking targets bettering expectations, and earns appreciation from Chief Commercial Manager, Southern Railway


Ticketless travelling is the biggest challenge for railways, leading to the revenue loss to railways. Southern Railway is taking all effective steps to curb this menace by way of increased checks including the surprise ones and Salem Division is putting all its available resources towards this goal. A team of TTIs (Travelling Ticket Checking Inspectors) were involved in this drive, over and above the day-to-day ticket verification duty in trains.  In addition, the officers of the Salem Division Commercial Branch also take up individual ticket checking on a regular basis.

In the past 3 months, from April to June, 2016, the Commercial Branch of Salem Division took up this challenge and has performed outstandingly well, collecting a sum of Rs.82,98,529/- towards ticket fare and penalties. The break up figures is provided hereunder:

Smt S. Padmavathi, TTI of Salem Division has surpassed the targets and by way of effective ticket checking, has ensured collection of Rs.9,06,580/- from April to June, 2016. Appreciating her achievement, Sri Ajeet Saxena, Chief Commercial Manager, Southern Railway, has granted a cash award of Rs.5,000/- to Smt. Padmavathi, and also a group award of Rs.10,000/- for the other TTIs. He also mentioned in his appreciation letter to Sri Hari Shankar Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, that Salem Division has set a new bench mark and will be a role model for other Divisions in Southern Railway, in terms of ticket checking.

Sri Hari Shanker Verma, DRM, has also congratulated Sri Viju Vin, Divisional Commercial Manager, Salem, and the TTIs of Salem Division, for this fete.

New ADRM takes charge in Salem Division, Southern Railway




Sri Chandra Pal, has taken over charge as Addl. Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) of Salem Division. An officer belonging to the Indian Railway Stores Services, Sri Chandra Pal joined Indian Railways in the year 1990 and has served as Chief Materials Manager in South Western Railway, Hubli, before taking over charge as ADRM, Salem. He is a B.Tech. graduate in Civil Engineering and has worked in Northern Railway, Central Railway, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, and South Western Railway, in various capacities, earlier. Sri Chandra Pal succeeds Sri Ravi Shekar Sinha, who has been transferred to Southern Railway Head Quarters, Chennai, as Chief Materials Manager. 

Advice for closure of Postal Reservation Centre due to non-demand


The following Advance Train Ticket Reservation Centers (Postal PRS) located in the post offices are proposed to be closed shortly, due to the reason that these fall below the minimum ticket booking norm of 25 tickets per day, as fixed by the Railway Board. Public may please make a note of the same and approach their nearest Railway Reservation Offices/facilities for booking their train tickets in advance.

Come forward to support Indian Railways by travelling in trains in more numbers to have a safe and comfortable journey and to boost revenue of Railways – DRM, Salem, appeals to passengers

The 2 escalators that were installed in Platform Nos. 1 & 3/4  of the Salem Junction at a cost of Rs.2 crores with a view to help differently-abled passengers and senior citizens, were inaugurated by Sri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways, from Chennai Central through video conferencing, today (24.07.2016).

During his address Sri Suresh Prabhu said that the Ministry of Railways is focusing and giving priority to railway projects in Tamil Nadu and allocating funds multi-fold year over year, and particularly giving priority to projects like installation of escalators to assist passengers. 

The plaque for the inauguration of Escalators at Salem Junction was opened by Sri Hari Shankar Verma, DRM, Salem, in the presence of dignitaries, officers and staff of Salem Division, Southern Railway, simultaneously when Hon’ble Railway Minister unveiled the plaque at Chennai Central for the project.

Later, addressing the media persons, Sri Hari Shankar Verma, DRM, stated that Indian Railways, as pointed out by Hon’ble Minister, is spending more on passenger amenities in Railway stations to make the train journey safe and comfortable. In Salem Junction, the works for a second entry on the other side has already started and will be available for use by passengers soon, he added. He further stated that the works for installation of escalators at Erode has started and will be completed shortly. 

Sri Verma stated that Indian Railways is giving priority to Passenger Train Services and in Salem Division, now all Passenger trains are ensured to start in time and arrive/depart in stations in time, maintaining punctuality.  He appealed to the public to come forward to travel in trains in more numbers, which is a safe and comfortable way of travel compared to road journey, and this will help Railways to increase its revenue, which will in turn ensure implementation of more projects and passenger amenities. He also solicited the help from passengers and other rail users to keep the railway premises clean.

On questions from media persons, DRM replied that the WiFi facilities will be rolled out in Coimbatore junction first, being a A1 Category station and will be later expanded to Salem and Erode.  He also said that proposals have been sent to Southern Railway Had Quarters for day time train from Salem to Chennai via Jolarpet, night time train from Coimbatore to Bangaluru, day time train from Salem to Chennai via Vridhachalam and these proposals are being followed up. The request by Hon’ble Namakkal MP Sri P.R.Sundaram, for extension of Chennai Egmore-Salem Express up to Karur, is also being pursued with head quarters, he said.

Pension Adalat 2016 held at Southern Railway Salem Division today (15.07.2016)

The Mid-Term Pension Adalat for the year 2016, was held by the Salem Division of Southern Railway, today (15.07.2016) at the Railway Officers’ Club Premises, near the Divisional Office. This mid-term Adalat (Grievance Redressal Meeting) is being held over and above the mandatory regular Pension Adalat that is being held all over Indian Railways on 15th December, every year. The Adalat was presided over by Sri Ravi Sekhar Sinha, Additional Divisional Railway Manager. About 60 retired railway pensioners/beneficiaries attended the Adalat and submitted their claims. The members  of the Standing Committee of Voluntary Agencies, (SCOVA) an organization  recognized by the Govt. of India, were  also invited to be present to assist the pensioners/beneficiaries. Sri G. Janarthanan, Divisional Personnel Officer,  Sri. Anand Bantya, Asst. Divisional Financial Manager, and other Divisional Officers were present during the Adalat.

Totally, 34 representations were received for redressal during the Adalat, of which 21 were disposed in favour of the applicants and an amount of Rs.5,10,397/- (Rupees five lakh ten thousand, three hundred and ninety seven only) was released in favour of them. 12 representations could not be entertained as they were in contravention to the extant rules. Further, 1 representation had to be kept pending for want of sufficient supporting documents.   Further, 21 more representations that were submitted afresh on the day of Adalat, will be taken up for examination and will be disposed of in a month’s time. 

The pensioners/beneficiaries who attended the Adalat expressed their happiness and satisfaction over the steps taken by the Salem Division administration to listen to their grievances and settle them off.
