Modernization of rail track in Platform No.4 of Salem Junction and operation of trains through Platform No.5

The finished look of the modern track in Platform No.5 of Salem Junction
State-of-the art Vassloh elastic Fastening Fittings
The Platform No.4 of Salem Junction is at present having the track with ballasts. This is being converted to a modern track system called RHEDA which is based on German technology that is being used for tracks in elevated tracks and tunnels, using RHEDA ballastless sleepers and Vassloh state of the art elastic fastening fittings. The main advantages of the new type of track are capable of handling heavy loads, operating passing through trains at higher speeds, without compromising on track safety. Since similar work that was taken up in Platform No.5 of the Salem Junction has already been completed and trains have already been received and dispatched from Platform No.5, all the trains that are being operated through Platform No.4 will now be received and dispatched from Platform No.5. The works are to start from tomorrow i.e. 10.04.2015 and will be completed tentatively in 45 days i.e. by 24.05.2015.  The new track at Platform No. 4 will be to a length of 540 meters. The new track, after completion, will be able to handle trains at a maximum speed of 50 kmph as against the speed of 15 kmph maximum permissible speed in the conventional track system.  The total estimated cost of the works is Rs.7.76 crores.

  1. The width of Platform No. 5 is less. It is very difficult to handle highly patronised trains like Kovai, Chennai Intercity, Yercaud Express in this platform. Passengers will find it very difficult to board or alight from such trains. For the passengers convenience, Trains which are received in Platform No.4 are to be received in Platform No.3. Since Platform No.3 and 4 are island platform, it will be very convenient for passengers and the width of this island platform is more. Canteen and other facilities are not available in Platform No.5. Please consider this suggestion positively for implementation.
