Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent in early childhood, typically before age three. Early speech or behavioral interventions can help children with autism gain self-care, social, and communication skills. With a view to create awareness on autism that it is only a deficiency and not a disease that can be set right and to make it known that the children with autism can be brought back to normalcy with proper training and care, United Nations (UN) has declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day on which day, every year, important buildings and land marks are decorated in blue color.

In line with the UN initiative, Salem Division of Southern Railway has lit its important stations buildings in blue color including Salem, Coimbatore and Erode Railway Stations. The Electrical General Branch of Salem Division has arranged for this.
