Railway Stations of Salem Division, Southern Railway, shine in Blue on World Autism Awareness Day (2nd April, 2016)

Salem Junction shining in blue
Coimbatore Junction on World Autism Awareness Day Night

Autism is a mental condition, present from early childhood, characterized by great difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people and in using language and abstract concepts. The diagnostic criteria require that symptoms become apparent in early childhood, typically before age three. Early speech or behavioral interventions can help children with autism gain self-care, social, and communication skills. With a view to create awareness on autism that it is only a deficiency and not a disease that can be set right and to make it known that the children with autism can be brought back to normalcy with proper training and care, United Nations (UN) has declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day on which day, every year, important buildings and land marks are decorated in blue color.

In line with the UN initiative, Salem Division of Southern Railway has lit its important stations buildings in blue color including Salem, Coimbatore and Erode Railway Stations. The Electrical General Branch of Salem Division has arranged for this.

Construction of the new modern railway station building at Periyanaickanpalayam, Coimbatore, commenced

The foundation stone for the new station building for the 153 years old Periyanaickanpalayam Railway Station was laid today (02.04.2016) by Sri Shubhranshu, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem Division, in the presence of Sri R.Rajendran, Director, Lakshmi Machine Works Ltd., (LMW) Coimbatore, Sri R.S. Sinha, Addl. DRM, Salem, Sri Nandagopal, Divl. Engineer, and other officials and staff of Salem Division.

Periyanaickenpalayam railway station, in the Coimbatore North-Mettupalayam Section, is one of the oldest railway stations in India and was established in the year 1873. With a view provide amenities for the Railway passengers therein, a proposal was submitted by LMW for construction of a new modern station building at an estimated cost of Rs.75 lakhs and the same was approved by the Railway administration.

To mark the starting of construction works for the new station building, the Foundation Stone was laid by Sri Shubhranshu, today. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the construction would be completed within 8 months’ time and he thanked the LMW officials for taking up this cause under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the Govt of India. He said that the new station building with modern amenities would help the railway passengers in the area in general and the inmates of the nearby Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University and the employees of LMW, in particular. This will also facilitate the industrial development of the area, he added.

While answering the questions from media persons, Sri Shubhranshu said that there was no immediate scope for doubling the Coimbatore North – Mettupalayam railway line, since the present single line is adequately servicing the needs of the commuters in the section. He further stated that due to safety reasons, there was no idea for the Salem Railway Division administration to operate special trains in the Nilagiri Mountain Railway section, particularly due to the fragile nature of the Mettupalayam-Coonoor section. However, he said that to cater to the increased demand by passengers, Salem Division has added one more unreserved coach to the NMR train, on trial basis. For construction of Thudiyalur Railway Station, the Coimbatore Corporation has remitted its share to the Railway administration and tenders have been called for the construction works. He said that the tender process would be completed within 2 weeks and works would start soon.

Members of the Coimbatore and Periyanaickenpalayam Railway Passengers Associations expressed their happiness over the steps taken by Salem Division administration to improve passenger amenities in its stations. Sri K.P. Damadoran, Sr. Divisional Commercial Manager, Sri E. Harikrishnan, Sr. Divisional Operations Manager, Sri S.
