In Indian Railways, Level Crossings continue to be contributors for most rail mishaps, most of the times, due to the poor awareness among the road users. In line with the International Level Crossing Day that is being observed all over the world railways, on 2nd June every year, Indian Railways is observing a Level Crossing Awareness Week from 29.05.2017 to 02.06.2017.   During this period, various awareness programs are being conducted by the Divisions of Southern Railway to educate the road/rail users on safely using the level crossings.

Safety Branch of Salem Division has conducted various awareness program during this Level Crossing Awareness Week. On 29.05.2017, street dramas called ‘Nukkad Natak’ were conducted in the Vazhappadi Bus Stand and the Minnampalli Weekly Market, where public gathered in large numbers.

On 30.05.2017, awareness pamphlets were distributed to road users in 17 unmanned level crossings an 1 manned LC in the Salem-Chinna Salem Section. On 31.05.2017, Special Checks and Safety Drives were conducted in LC Nos. 172, 174 and 175 in the Salem-Vridhachalam Section in coordination with the RTO officials and RPF personnel. On 01.06.2017, Road Shows were conducted in the level crossings at Karur-Dindigul Section and pamphlets were distributed to road users on how to safely cross the unmanned level crossings.

Sri Hari Shankar Verma, DRM, Salem, said that out of the 72 unmanned LCs (53 in Salem-Vridhachalam Section; 4 in Erode-Trichy Fort Section; 10 in Karur-Dindigul Section; 1 in Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Section; and 4 in Mettupalayam-Ooty Section), 22 have already been closed by last year (2016-17) and out of the balance 50, 23 LCs will be closed in 2017-18 (20 by construction of Limited Use Subways and 3 by manning).  By 2018 end, all the unmanned level crossings have been planned to be eliminated, he added. He requested the road users to exercise caution while using manned and unmanned level crossings, by waiting and watching before crossing such LCs. By their cooperation, Railways will be in a position to reduce the number of accidents in LCs, thus saving precious lives and property, he said.
