Salem Division to go for Bio-toilets in full focus

In line with the policies of Ministry of Railways to go for clean and green tracks, Salem Division, Southern Railway, is focusing more on retro fitment of Biotoilets in the rakes that are being provided with primary maintenance at Carriage and Wagon Depot of Salem Division at Coimbatore. Some of these trains are Cheran/Navjeevan Express, Coimbatore-Chennai Intercity Express, Coimbatore-Mannargudi Chemmozhi Express, Coimbatore-Mayiladuthurai Jan Shatabdi Express, Coimbatore-Nagercoil/Tuticorin Express, etc.

Salem Division is taking up retro fitment of Bio-toilets in 35 coaches of these rakes and a total of 140 bio-toilets will thus be retro fitted in the above mentioned trains (35 coaches x 4 bio toilets each=140). These bio-toilets have already been procured by Railway Board centrally and have been received in 2 lots viz. 30.12.2016 and 12.02.2017.  These coaches have been taken up for retro fitment in the above trains and already fitment works in 15 coaches have been completed. Since these bio-toilets can be fitted only on the spare coaches available at the Depot, the works are taken up on rotation basis, at the rate of 1 coach in every 2 days, and it has been planned to complete the retro fitment in the remaining coaches also by 25th March, 2017.

The cost of retro fitment of 4 bio-toilets in each coach is approx. Rs. 4,13,000/- ( all inclusive).
