Laying of Foundation stone for the Kallakurichi-Chinna Salem new BG line by Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways Sri Suresh Prabhu

The foundation stone for the new BG line  between Kallakurichi and Chinna Salem is  being laid by Sri  Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, Hon’ble Union Minister  for Railways, on 7th February, 2016, by way of Video conferencing from Chennai, in the presence of State Minister, Members of Parliament and other dignitaries.

This project, originally sanctioned in the year 2006, is now getting into shape by the concerted efforts of the incumbent Central and State Governments, with the laying of Foundation Stone on Sunday.  The updated estimated cost of the new BG line is Rs.116.61 crores and the Govt of Tamil Nadu has deposited a sum of Rs.64 crores towards its cost sharing at 50:50. This provision of funds is expected to provide impetus to this prestigious project which will provide the vital rail link to the residents of Kallakurichi with the main railway line, putting Kallakurichi in the Railway Map of India, for the first time since Independence.

The total length of the new BG line will be 16.20 kms with 2 major bridges, 22 minor bridges, 1 Road Over Bridge (ROB) and 10 road under bridges (RUB)  en route. There will be 3 manned level crossings, of which 1 already exists in the current Salem-Vridhachalam line. 47.62 hectares of land is proposed to be acquired for the project. In the second phase of the project, the BG line will further be extended up to Ulundurpet in the Villupuram-Vridhachalam cord line, for which survey has already been conducted and report submitted to Railway Board.

On the staff front, 16 dwelling Units of Type II and 2 Units of Type III will be constructed for the use by the Railway Staff in Kallakurichi.

The new BG line between Kallakurichi and Chinna Salem, once completed, will stimulate the economic growth of the region by way of rail connectivity.

  1. Great.. Please get approval for Kallakurichi-Ulunderpet extension. Also include a bypass at Salem Jn so that train from Salem Town towards Coimbatore/Karur can skip Salem Junction.

Salem division should move the electrification proposal too.

  3. This project will be more convenient and beneficial to the resident of Kallikurichi and nearby area. Also it will be helpful to the passengers of Cuddalore, Villupuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Tiruchirapalli Districts to reach Kallkurichi by rail easily. This route is further to be extended upto Thiruvannamalai via Moongilthuraipattu so that Vellore, Tirupati and other places will be connected in future. - M VENKATESAN, THANJAVUR (09486103264)

This route is further to be extended up to Ulundurpet. Advantages are: 1.It will reduce the Salem -Chennai distance by minimum 30 Kms and running time by 1 hour. 2. No need to touch VRI and unnecessary loco reversals 3. Best alternative route to Chennai and ease out Salem-Chennai traffic on the Jolarpettai line. 4. Busy freight traffic can be diverted on this line. But it will take another 25 years for the Railways to complete the project. Without linking Ulundurpet, this line will be an utter waste.
