Salem Division launches Electrical Safety Awareness Campaign

With a view to create awareness on safely crossing railway tracks and other railway premises, and thus avoiding loss of valuable lives due to electrocution, Salem Division of Southern Railway, has launched a Electrical Safety Awareness Campaign, from 03.02.2016 to 05.02.2016. Today, the Electrical Safety Rath (Electrical Safety Propaganda Van) was flagged off from the Divisional Office premises by Sri Shubhranshu, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, today (03.02.2016), in the presence of Sri  R.S.Sinha, Addl. DRM, Sri P.K. Selvan, Sr. Divisional Electrical Engineer/Operations, Sri B.S. Rajan, Sr. Divisional Safety Officer, and other staff/officers of Salem Division.

The  propaganda van will travel for 3 days to all areas of Salem Division, including Railway Stations, level crossings, schools, market places, etc., and carry out awareness propaganda, by way of distribution of Safety precautions Pamphlets, pocket calendars in Tamil and English, audio announcements over public address system, and distribution of hand kerchiefs carrying safety slogans. It has been planned to meet a minimum of 50,000 public during this campaign and create awareness. During the campaign period, railway staff, particularly the loco pilots who operate the trains would be educated on the risk of passing the signal when in danger (red color).


During his meeting with media persons during the flag off, Sri Shubhranshu stated that by way of such awareness programs, during the current year, there was no loss of lives in Salem Division controlled area, due to electrocution. He further stated that out of the  70 unmanned level crossings in Salem Division, 20 are planned to be closed this year (2016), and 5 have already been closed. By end of 2017, he expressed the hope that all the unmanned LCs in Salem Division, would have been eliminated by way of manning, construction of Limited Use Subways  (LUS), Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and diversion to nearby road, etc., He solicited the cooperation of the public in not crossing the railway tracks other than the designated locations and by not going near the high voltage electrical installations.
