As part of its ambitious project of planting 5 lakhs tree saplings and maintain them, Salem Division, Southern Railway, organized a Mass Tree Plantation Program at Kottagoundampatti Village, in between Omalur and Magnasite junctions, in which 5001 tree saplings were planted, in 4.5 acres of land on both sides of the railway track. The saplings were planted at a safe distance away from the railway track, with a view to not hinder the future expansion of railway tracks on both sides.

Sri K.K. Sharma, Principal Chief Engineer, Southern Railway, participated in the tree plantation program as Chief Guest and planted a few saplings, in the presence of Sri Hari Shankar Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem. About 500 school children from the nearby Govt. School and the students and teachers of Padmavani Arts and Science College, also participated in the tree plantation program and planted saplings enthusiastically, along with the officers and staff of Salem Division. Various varieties of trees such as Neem, Vagai, Badam, Bamboo, Silver Oak, etc. were planted by the participants. Drip irrigation has been arranged for watering of the trees. In future, there is also a plant to install solar powered pumps for drawing water for watering the plants. The tree saplings were provided by the Rotary Club of Salem Junction, Pokkisham and Renature (both NGOs), members of which also participated in the tree plantation.

While addressing the gathering, Sri K.K. Sharma said that it is not important how many trees we plant, but it is important that how well we maintain them. In line with the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Sri Narendra Modiji’s vision of a clean and green India, Indian Railways is taking various steps towards this goal, under the guidance of Sri Suresh Prabhuji, Hon’ble Railway Minister, he added. He further suggested that the plants that survive the local climate should be planted and preserved.

During his address, Sri Hari Shankar Verma insisted that the trees should be planted in a proper mixture, as the nature needs all types of plants, not only the cash crops/plants. He expressed his happiness about the school children and college students participating in large numbers in such programs.

Sri  M. Mariappan, Divisional Engineer, Salem, welcomed the gathering and also proposed the vote of thanks. Sri Chandra Pal, Addl. DRM, Salem, Sri Ma. Vignavelu, Sr. Divisional Engineer, Coordination, Salem, and other officers and staff of Salem Division participated in the program in large numbers.
