Observance of Swachch Bharat Saptah (Clean India Week) campaign by Salem Division, Southern Railway, from 17.09.2016 to 25.09.2016





Cleanliness in Railway Stations and other railway premises has become a matter of major concern for the Ministry of Railways and under the guidance of Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Sri Suresh Prabhu, Indian Railways is vigorously taking up the awareness creation activities on a regular basis, without a break. As a part of this continuous process, Indian Railways is observing a Swachch Bharat Saptah (Clean India Week) campaign from 17th September, 2016, to 25th September, 2016. Various activities on day-to-day basis are planned to be taken up during this Swachch Bharat Saptah, as detailed hereunder:

17.09.2016 (Saturday)-Swachch Paryavaran Divas – Clean Environment Day – Day one would be dedicated to cleanliness of the entire Railway premises, including stations and trains. Works such as beautification of railway premises such as pruning of trees, plantation and landscaping would be undertaken on this day.

18.09.2016 (Sunday)-Swachch Station Divas – Clean Stations Day – Day two would be dedicated to intensive cleaning of Railway Stations, using cleaning machines and other tools/plants. Separate dustbins would be provided for collection of different types of waste such as bio-degradable, non-degradable, etc. A campaign for “Filling the Dustbin” and “Donate Dustbins” would be taken up to create awareness among various stake holders, involving organizations such as NGOs, Scouts & Guides, etc.

19.09.2016 (Monday)-Swachch Railgaadi Divas – Clean Trains Day – Day three would be dedicated to ensure cleanliness on board in all trains. Special inspections would be carried out in pantry cars and other eating establishments would be undertaken.

20.09.2016 (Tuesday)-Swachch Neer Divas – Clean Water Day – Day four would be dedicated to ensure cleanliness in water supply by carrying out intensive inspection of all water installations in railway premises including filter plants, sources of water supply, water tanks and taps in trains. All water installations would be checked on this day and sample checks would be conducted on quality of water.

21.09.2016 (Wednesday)-Swachch Parisar Divas – Clean Complex Day – Day five would be dedicated to cleaning of circulating areas of railway stations, cleaning of drains in stations, and removing of unauthorized encroachments.

22.09.2016 (Thursday)-Swachch Sahyog Divas – Participative Cleanliness Day – Day six would be dedicated to creating awareness among all rail users to keep the railway premises clean, by way of distribution of handouts/notices, imposing fine on defaulters, undertaking road shows, etc., involving NGOs, schools, trade unions and voluntary groups.

23.09.2016 (Friday)-Swachch Samwad Divas – Cleanliness Dialogue Day – On day seven, DRM, Salem, would preside over the Seminar on Sanitation and upkeep of Railway Premises. He will also meet the media persons to explain about the various activities undertaken by Salem Division during this Swachch Bharat Saptah-Clean India Week.

24.09.2016 (Saturday)-Swachch Samarpan Divas –Day of Dedication for ensuring cleanliness– On the eighth day of the program, Cleanliness Marches around the railway premises including the railway colonies and conducting road shows/skits/dramas on importance of cleanliness, involving school students, scouts and guides, etc., would be conducted.


25.09.2016 (Sunday)-Swachch Aahar Divas –Clean Food Day– On the last day of the program, checks would be conducted in all static and mobile catering units, restaurants, food stalls and other catering places in the Railway Stations and Pantry Cars in the trains, to ensure cleanliness, hygiene and quality of food, cleanliness and hygiene of the cooks, bearers and other workers, with emphasis on proper handling and disposal of kitchen and catering wastes/garbage. 

Officers of Salem Division have been nominated for each station by Sri Hari Shankar Verma, Divisional Railway Manager, Salem, to supervise and carry out the above activities.
