Salem Division's Focus on Safety and Comfort of Passengers

SAFETY MEASURES UNDERTAKEN BY THE DIVISION:
Road shows and counselling of general public at weekly markets, panchayat offices, petrol bunks and schools are being conducted to create awareness on safe crossing of unmanned level crossings. In keeping with the commitment given by the Ministry of Railways, it is proposed to eliminate all the unmanned Level Crossings by construction of subways, manning and linking with existing Level Crossings. In the current year, 12 unmanned level crossings have thus been eliminated. During the month of August 2013, a record number of 9 Limited User Subways (LUS) were constructed in place of the unmanned level crossings. LED lights have been provided at various level crossing gates to facilitate easy crossing of LC gates by road vehicle users.

PASSENGER SAFETY
Regular awareness campaigns are being conducted at all the stations of Salem Division advising passengers not to carry inflammable materials and regular checks are being conducted in this regard. During festival occasions such as Deepavali, special awareness campaigns are being carried out by Salem Division, advising the passengers against carrying crackers. This year, a giant size cracker model was installed in Salem Junction carrying awareness slogans against carrying crackers in trains. As part of the Integrated Security System in stations, Baggage Scanners, CCTVs, Parcel Scanners have been provided in Coimbatore station at a total cost of Rs.4 crores (approx.). Further, an under-vehicle-scanner is also under installation at the entrance of the Coimbatore station to scan the cars entering the station premises.

UPKEEP OF STATIONS AND TRAINS

High Pressure jet cleaning systems at Platforms of Erode (3 Nos.), Coimbatore (2 Nos.) and Mettupalayam (1 No.) have been provided, to improve the cleanliness of coaches and platforms. In Southern Railway, Erode station is selected under Clean Train Station (CTS) scheme. Under the CTS, all passenger trains that run for more than 4 hours before reaching Erode, especially the long distance trains, are maintained at Erode as part of the special measures taken towards passenger comfort, by keeping the coaches and passenger areas clean and hygienic. On an average, 41 trains with 251 reserved coaches per day are identified for this scheme. The works are carried out from 06.00 hours to 22.00 hours.
